Galapagos Voting Turns Nasty
The Ecuadorian Navy is being called in to guard the building of the Provincial Council in Galapagos. The worst incident took place on Friday June 5. A mob took over the building where the Supreme Electoral Tribunal counts the votes. They destroyed the urns and computers. Meanwhile, the tribunal moved to the navy headquarters and apparently got away with the election results on diskette.
The angry mob is protesting what they believe is election fraud after their candidates did not win. The winners of the election for the 2 deputy posts were Alfredo Serrano (Christian Social Party PSC) and Fanny Uribe (Popular Democratic DP). They are demanding a new election.
